Analysis of expression profile of APC in pterygium

Background: Pterygium is a fairly general condition in many hot regions of the world. The etiology of this abnormality is still ambiguous. However, recent findings suggest that pterygium is a benign progressive tissue and not a degenerative disorder. The main goal of our study was the analyze of APC expression profile on therisk of pterygium. Material and methods: In this study, the RNA of 20 primary pterygium and 20 normal conjunctiva tissues were extractedand modified for preparing the cDNA. We estimated the mRNA expression levels of these genes in pterygium and normalconjunctiva tissue samples using real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR. Results: we detected a decreased expression of the APC gene in pterygium but it was not significant. Conclusion: Our results indicated that reduced expression of APC gene have taken place in patients with the pterygium. To confirm the presented data, suggesting further studies with a larger sample size in various genetic populations.
