Impoliteness Strategies in Interactions between Teenage EFL/ESL Learners and non-Native/Native Teachers in the Classroom Context

This current research aimed to investigate impoliteness strategies in classroom interaction within EFL/ESL teachers and teenage intermediate EFL/ESL learners. For that purpose, three sessions of these classes were audio recorded. The talks were transcribed and content analyzed to recognize the impolite strategies. Subsequently, frequency and percentage analysis was used to come across the most and the least frequent impoliteness strategies. In general, the findings of this study revealed that ignorance and failure to attend others’ interest, needs, and wants were the most commonly used types of impoliteness strategies in both EFL/ESL learners. The former strategies and being disinterested, unconcerned, and unsympathetic were found as the most impoliteness strategies for EFL teachers. Disobey the social norms of behavior was the most frequently used type of impoliteness in ESL teachers’ talk. Additionally, the least frequent impoliteness strategies in EFL teachers’ talk included disassociate from the other; patronizing behavior; making the other feel uncomfortable and in ESL teachers’ talk contained creativity impoliteness, using idioms, or expressions; ignorance and failure toattend others’ interest, needs, and wants; disassociate from the other; and unpalatable questions. The least frequent strategies in EFL learners’ talk were emerged in four strategies: negative expressions; creativity impoliteness, using idioms, or expressions; complaints; unpalatable questions and/or presuppositions and also in ESL learner’s talk were represented in two strategies: creativity impoliteness, using idioms, or expressions; and complaints. The result of this study reveals, impoliteness strategies can be of importance in classroom interactions, the awareness of impoliteness strategies can reinforce the quality of teacher-student interactions accordingly
