Comparing two vocabulary teaching strategies and their effects on Iranian junior high school students vocabulary retention: flash card and word list

In learning a foreign language, vocabulary is the most vital part. Vocabulary learning is considered as the basic step toward mastering a foreign language. This study compared the effects of using flash card versus word list on Iranians third graders at Shahed junior high school in Gorgan city. The Participants of the study were consisted of two groups of 20 students receiving necessary instructions during one semester on four lessons of their English book presented one group on flash cards and the other one on word lists. A posttest was given to participants after one week. A questionnaire administered by the researcher explored students’ attitudes toward both strategies. Statistical analysesof two vocabulary test scores suggested that the flash card strategy yielded better performance on vocabulary retention. Results of questionnaire shows that a majority of students preferred the flash card strategy to word list strategy to facilitate their vocabulary retention
