The relationship between cognitive perception of self-concept and coping styles in heart failure patients

Introduction: Coping styles can affect the morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases. A contributing factor to the selection of coping style is self-concept. Positive self-concept has a direct association with the selection of different dimensions of positive coping styles. to determine the relationship between self-concept and coping styles in patients with heart failure in an Iranian population.Methods: In this correlational study, 100 HF patients hospitalized in the CCU and cardiac ward of Vali-Asr Hospital of Birjand, Iran were selected by convenience sampling method from April 2014 to July 2014. Two validated and reliable questionnaires including Cognitive Perception of Self-Concept and the Coping Styles questionnaires were completed by each patient. The data were analyzed using chi-square, Pearson correlation coefficient, Manne Whitney, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis. The significance level is considered at P<0.05.Results: There were significant association between emotion-oriented and threat to self-concept in total and physical sensation and self-consistency dimensions. Also a significant association was observed between avoidance-oriented and threat to self-concept in total and body sensation dimension (P < 0.05). There was no significant association between problem-oriented component and threat to self-concept in total and none of its dimensions. Challenge to self-concept and its dimensions were not significant related with any component of coping styles.Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that nursing interventions performed for stress management and coping style preferred choice in heart failure patients should be focused on enriching the cognitive perception of self-concept.
