Evaluation of the effect of Nixamol cream compared with Permethrin shampoo1% in the treatment of head lice infection

Background: Pediculosis capitis is a common condition caused by infestation of the hair and scalp by Pediculus humanus capitis (the head louse) one of three distinct varieties of lice specifically parasitic for humans. Permethrin shampoo 1% is the most common method of controlling pediculosis in Iran. Objectives : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of permethrin shampoo 1% and nixamol cream 1% to introduce an effective and alternative compound on shampoo permethrin in the treatment of pediculosis. Materials and Methods : In this study, two formulations of Permethrin shampoo 1% and Nixamol cream 1% were used on 199 infected (170 girl and 29 boys) who were randomly selected from health center of Darab. Kazeroon & Zarindasht district. Treatment was performed according to randomized clinical trial and shampoo, cream administration. Results were followed one and two weeks after treatment. Result: The result of this study revealed, there was a significant relationship in potency between the two methods of treatment by the cream Nixamol and shampoo Permethrin1% (p< 0.001). The efficacy rates of the two groups at the end of the first week were 81% and 19% for nixamol cream and shampoo permethrin respectively. In the end of second week, these values were 100% and 87% for nixamol cream and permethrin 1% shampoo respectively. Conclusion: Regaring to this study, the nixamol cream can be a appropriative for treatment of pediculosis capitis infections. Of course it s cleard that effectiveness of nixamol cream are strongly related to correct use of instructions and its combination with regular combing of wet hair with fine tooth comb.
