چکیده مقاله:

Background: Climate change and associated alterations of precipitation pattern affect the physiological behavior of insects. Insects may respond to environmental changes by increasing growth, population development and outbreaks. Recently, three problematic outbreaks of Calosoma spp. occurred in Jiroft County. Resurged swarms of Ground beetle were nuisance to residential building and public places. Moreover, the beetle causes annoyance by emitting strong odors as defensive secretions. This is the first report on a Carabid beetle outbreaks from southeast of Iran. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the climate change on carabid population growth and biological characteristic in Jiroft County.Materials and Methods: We studied the abundance of Ground beetles in relation to main climatic factors in south regions of Kerman during a period from March to June 2019. The average monthly temperature and precipitation rate from 1995 to 2019 were analyzed. Beetle specimens were collected and identified at a species level in cooperation with the Insect Classification Division of the Iranian Institute of Plant Protection (IRIPP).Results: The beetle outbreaks occurred in 1995, 2010 and 2019 after increased precipitation during March to May. The recent outbreak occurred approximately 12 days post-rainfall in early April. The rainfall broke the diapause of immature stages of beetles in late winter and early spring. We observed numerous orthopteran wings near theircolonies. They seemed to feed on con-species corpses or injured individuals. The beetle escapes direct sunlight by hiding mostly under leaves, vegetation, debris and shade.Calosoma spp. is 23±3 mm long, dark with gradient elytra and slender walking legs. They run rapidly but rarely fly. The beetle is attracted in a large number to lights sources both in- and out-doors at night. In daytime, they take shelter in stone crevices or burrow holes in wet soil. The beetles are useful predator of harmful Lepidoptera and Orthoptera, but may create phobia to or pinch inhabitants when in high numbers. Conclusion: The beetle has a potential to be considered as a biological agent, though more investigations need to be carry out on impact of environmental factors on beetle population dynamics.
