Comparative study of pregnancy out come and postpartum depression among women with wanted and unwanted pregnancy

Background and Aim : The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between unwantedpregnancy and complications of pregnancy and postpartum depression in women referred to selected healthcare centers in Robat Karim in 2018-2019.Methods : This study was conducted with cohort method and with the participation of mothers referring tohealth care centers of Robat Karim in 2018. A total of 240 pregnant women were included into study afterthe completion of the London questionnaire in the week 26 of pregnancy. They were equally included inwanted and unwanted groups (each group included 120 women). Data were collected using a demographicquestionnaire, Edinburg s postpartum depression, and pregnancy complication checklist. Data wereanalyzed using SPSS 21 software.Results : Depression score 10 days and 30 days after labor in unwanted pregnancy was higher than wantedpregnancy (P <0.001).Breastfeeding in the unwanted group was significantly lower than that of the wantedgroup (24.3% vs. 71.7% and P = 0.001). Neonatal weight was 3135.3 (220) in the wanted group and 3001.0(209.7) in the unwanted pregnancy group (P <0.001). Preeclampsia (7.5% versus 1.7% and P = 0.03) andpreterm labor (17.5% versus 5% and P = 0.002) in the unwanted group were significantly higher than thosein the wanted group..Conclusion : given the unwanted pregnancy complications and new demographic policies in providingfamily planning services, some measures should be taken to prevent unwanted pregnancy and providingsupport for unwanted pregnant mothers is recommended.
