A hybrid energy storage system, which combines the concepts of pumped hydro with uncooled compressed air energy storage and thermal energy storage systems is proposed and investigated. There are two tanks, one is in atmospheric pressure and one is thermally isolated and subjected to compressed air as well as heat from different heat sources including renewable energy sources (solar thermal or waste heat or etc.) and a micro-hydro turbine in the hybrid system. The hybrid energy storage system utilizes excess power from the grid to compress air and simultaneously heated this compressed air in sealed reservoir. Heating compressed air in constant volume cause increasing in pressure reservoir in an isochoric process, and as result by this method electrical and thermal energy can be stored in simple and cheap way. In addition, stored thermal energy can be delivered as electrical energy that is more valuable than thermal energy itself. To validate the above proposal, an experimental prototype from such a hybrid energy storage system developed and tested. Research results show a great solution for where storage of electrical and thermal energy is needed.
