Huck Finn: The Individual vs. the Society

Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn clearly depicts the confrontation betweenfreedom, conscience, superstition and society's restriction, moral codes and organized religion.This paper examines the theme of freedom vs. bondage, conscience vs. social codes andsuperstition against organized religion throughout the novel. The individual is limited bysociety's restrictions but Huck decides according to his conscience since the individual's naturalgoodness and innocence contradicts the prevalent hypocrisy and corruption and this behavior setshim apart as an individual. The study demonstrates how throughout the novel Twain emphasizesthe individual's right to think freely as opposed to what society thinks is correct.
