Coherence in Translation

In recent twenty years, foreign experts in linguistic field have attached greater importance to the study of coherence as an essential factor of text. Coherence is defined as the continuity of semantic content in the formation of concepts and relations (Alirez Bozorgi & Mohammad Jafar Jabbari, ٢٠١٤). Since the translation is a communication act, this qualitative corpus-based study tries to focus on how this linguistic variable functions in translation and to what extent is sustainable in the target text. To do so, a plethora of definitions are proposed by linguistics theorists and the significant role text plays with regard to coherence in translation. Four approaches have been presented to obtain the coherence of the target text from a source text during the process of translation. The findings indicated that in the process of translation, proper comprehension of the source text and appropriate adjustment of the target text depend on understanding semantic relationship among parts of a text.
