Building Text Structure Awareness Technique and its impact on Reading Comprehension performance, an Iranian case

This study attempts to investigate the impact of Text Structure Awareness Strategy on reading comprehension performance. To fulfill this, 60 female Iranian students were selected randomly from among 100 High school fourth-grade students in a school located in Shahre-Kord, Iran. After administering the Nelson Proficiency Test, 30 students with +1SD score were selected as intermediate-level students and 30 students with -1SD score as low-level students and divided into two groups (a control group & an experimental); each consisting of 15 at intermediate-level and 15 at low-level of proficiency respectively. A pretest was administered to both groups which showed no significant difference in their initial level. Then, the experimental group received the Text Structure Awareness treatment for reading passages of fourth-grade Book 2 while the control group learned the passages with no awareness. A posttest on reading comprehension was administered to both groups. A T-test was conducted on scores of both groups. The results showed that treatment had positive effects on the scores of both low-level and high-level participants in the experimental group, i.e., Text Structure awareness facilitated reading comprehension performance.
