Vocabulary knowledge is important because it encompasses all the words we must know to access our background knowledge, express our ideas, communicate effectively, and learn about new concept. The students need not only learn a lot of words but to remember them. This study probed the impact of L1 on Iranian EFL learners‟ vocabulary retention. To carry out this study, 82 female students were randomly selected from a foreign language institute in Golpayegan, Iran. They were divided into two groups: experimental group, those learners who received vocabulary through L1(mother language), and control group, those learners who received vocabulary through foreign language. A well-known proficiency test (Nelson series,050 D) was employed. A suitable vocabulary test used for pre-test, post test, and delay post test. There were thr treatment sessions for both groups. In treatment sessions, L1(mother language) was used for experimental group and foreign language was use for control group. Making sure of their homogeneity and administering a suitable vocabulary test, statistical analyses, MANCOVA and descriptive statistics, revealed that subjects in experimental group surpassed those in control group in vocabulary learning
