Analyzing Iranian Engineering Students’ English Needs and ESP Courses at the University

The purpose of the English for Specific Purposes programs (ESP) is to enable the students to cope with authentic discipline-specific English language. The needs, goals and wants of the learners have to be taken into consideration tomake the students reach the desired language proficiency in ESP courses. Given the unavoidable essential role of needsanalysis in English for specific purposes programs and based on a pedagogical framework driven from learningcenteredapproach for language instruction, this study aimed at assessing the academic and professional English needsof Iranian engineering students, analyzing the extent to which Iranian engineering students think those needs are metthrough the present ESP courses, and also to see if the present ESP syllabi need any modifications. 115 undergraduate engineering students filled out a 30-Item questionnaire. The quantitative and qualitative data gained through thequestionnaire revealed that the students have clear ideas towards their ESP courses. Most of the students weredissatisfied with limited time of ESP courses, poor materials, teaching methodology, and the selection of subjectspecific teachers rather than ELT instructors in ESP courses. The students believed that ESP syllabi need essential modifications.
