On the Relationships between Personality Traits, Work Engagement, and Burnout among Iranian EFL Teachers

Few studies in Iran have shed light on the exploration of possible correlation between the whole personality factors albeit applying Five-Big model and burnout. Another influential criterion in teaching context is workengagement. However, as far as the researcher is concerned, no single study has there been developed to explore anyaspects of work engagement. In order to bridge this gap, the current research was proposed to investigate any probablestatistically significant relationship between Myers and Briggs personality traits and teachers’ sense of burnout as well as any significant correlation between work engagement and burnout. Furthermore, the relationship among years ofexperience, burnout, and work engagement was analyzed. About 125 English instructors teaching in various privateinstitutes of Tehran participated in the study completing three questionnaires of MBI, UWES, and MBI. The survey wasalso designed in order to acquire some demographic features including years of experience. The result indicated thatthere was no statistically significant relationship between any of the personality types and feeling of burnout.Additionally, work engagement (total and vigor) correlated significantly with burnout. Taking years of teaching, burnout, work engagement, and years of experience associated significantly. That is to say, the more experienced theteachers were, the less burned out they were and vice versa. On the other hand, as the experience increases, workengagement goes down and vice versa. The findings offer a number of implications for in-service and pre-service teacher training systems and also may pave the way for further work engagement relevant research
