The Effect of Smart Interactive White-board Technology on Vocabulary Learning of Students

Since learning English is very popular in non-English speaking countries, developing modern assisted-learning tools that support effective English learning is a critical issue in the English-language education field. Learning Englishinvolves memorization and practice of a large number of vocabulary words and numerous grammatical structures.Vocabulary learning is a principal issue for English learning because vocabulary comprises the basic building blocks ofEnglish sentences. Therefore, many studies have attempted to improve the efficiency and performance when learningEnglish vocabulary. With the accelerated growth in multimedia technologies, SMART Interactive white boards seems effective because it inherits all the advantages of e-learning because it combines learning visually and verballyespecially it is beneficial for vocabulary learning. Therefore, this study presents English vocabulary learning systemthrough SMART interactive white boards. To conduct the study two groups of junior high-school students (N=60) areselected randomly from three schools that are equipped with this technology as a control group and an experimentalgroup. The students in both groups are given the multiple choice cloze pre-test, then the experimental group undergo the treatment procedure which is learning new vocabularies with using SMART interactive white boards. At the end both groups are given the post-test which is similar to the pre-test and the results are compared with each other. Theexperimental results indicated that the proposed SMART interactive white boards could obviously promote the learningperformances of learners due to effective and flexible learning mode for English vocabulary learning
