چکیده مقاله:

This study is an attempt to critically scrutinize and uncover the representation of culture and intercultural interactionsin the World English 1 textbook. To this aim, the texts and images of this textbook were evaluated both quantitativelyand qualitatively. Regarding gender, Hodge and Kress’s Syntagmatic models (1996) was applied in the analysis ofconversations of all units, as well as all proper nouns and pronouns, and pictures depicting males and femalesthroughout the textbook were counted to find out how this textbook represent these two genders. Kachru s model (1985)was also used to identify nationality. In this model, English is divided into three circles, the inner circle, the outercircle, and the expanding circle. Names and pictures of cities and countries were specified and counted, too. Thefindings indicated that the white men and the expanding circle are the most dominant. Also, this textbook, is biasedtowards men. The results also revealed the fact that both critical reflections and hybrid culture were in less significantconsideration.
