چکیده مقاله:

The purpose of this comparative literature study is to compare and contrast the two masterpieces of literature from different countries and to investigate the unique insights of both cultures toward the debatable and controversial theme of love . While Romeo and Juliet is the one of the greatest example of literature in the west, Layla and Majnun written by Nezami Ganjavi is another perfect example of literature in the east. Although these two great literary works were written at different times and places, they both take into account the view points toward the subject of love and the rollercoaster relationships among the lovers and their beloved. The true essence and nature of love is not agreed upon by the philosophers and authors and they believed that every single person perceive love according to his or her own personal backgrounds and experiences. The basic and fundamental frame work in this paper is the ideal and typical love models of Kovecses(1986) which is a huge book on the metaphors of anger, pride and most importantly love. Therefore, throughout this study, one will see various researches conducted regarding these literary works which summarizes the whole similarities and differences between the insights of Shakespere and Nizami Ganjavi. Actually, one of the findings of the paper is that the two major examples of undying love stories have more similarities than discrepancies. One of the discrepancies is the existence of hatred in Romeo and Juliet while it cannot be seen in the plot of the other one.
