THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS SYMPTOMS AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITY OF LIFE IN PREHOSPITAL EMERGENCY STAFF

Background and Aim : Repeated daily exposure of pre-hospital emergency personnel to thesuffering and death of people and working in dangerous situations exposes them to post traumaticstress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the psychiatric disorders andexposure to trauma is a key factor in its development. This disorder affects important aspects of aperson’s life such as professional quality of lifeMethods : A cross-sectional study of150emergency medical personnel in Iranshahr University ofMedical Sciences in2019, selected by simple randomized sampling, used the Weathers TraumaticStress Questionnaire and Stamm s quality of professional life. Data were analyzed by the SPSSsoftware v.20 using the Pearson correlation coefficient and linear regression.Results : The mean score of traumatic stress symptoms was8.7 ± 33.9in the range of17to85. Themean score of their professional quality of life was122.5 ± 13.4 in the range of30to150. The resultsshowed a significant conversely correlation between post-traumatic stress symptoms and qualityof professional life, so that those who had lower post-traumatic stress score had a better quality ofprofessional life (p value<0.000). Also, PTSD was significant positively correlated with burnoutand secondary traumatic stress and significant conversely correlated with compassion satisfact ion (p value<0.05). Also There was a significant negative correlation between the score of traumaticstress symptoms with education level and age (p value<0.05(Conclusion : Post-traumatic stress symptoms negatively affect the quality of life of medicalemergency staff. Therefore, it is recommended to identify factors associated with post-traumaticstress disorder and considered.
