Electromagnetic Interference to Buried Gas Pipelines Due to Nearby Electric Railway Systems

A full wave simulation methodology is presented in this paper to evaluate the electromagnetic interference produced by metropolitan railway systems on nearby buried gas pipelines. The technique is based on the method of moments (MoM) solution of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) governing the electromagnetic problem. Simulation results are compared with those obtained from site measurements and excellent agreement is found. The method can be effectively used to estimate the effects of electromagnetic pollution in the medium on pipeline coating and cathodic protection measures usually used to mitigate corrosion.
