Factors associated with medication non-adherence in patients with epilepsy

Background: Non-adherence to drugs is one of the barriers to treatment in all diseases. Non-adherence to epilepsy medications not only endangers the health of the patient, but also imposes a huge financial burden on the family, the community and the health system.The aim of this study was to assess the associated factors of antiepileptic drug non adherence. Methods:This study reviewed the scientific references of authentic databases, including Medline, Pubmed,Scopuse,SID,Web of science and google scholar.Overall,59 scientific studies conducted during 2005-2018 were collected. findings:Anti epileptic drugs non-adherence was found to be associated with forgetfulness, being seizure-free for a period, fear of adverse drug effects,poor medication self-administration management,lower self-efficacy,less social support, poor physician-patient relationship,being depressed or anxious, frequent medication dosage times, Payment for anti epileptic drugs and long duration of disease. Conclusion: These Findings suggested that Efforts are needed to provide information among patients with epilepsy that would lead to improved medication adherence.
