Background:Postpartum depression is one of the most commonly unbearable complications associated with childbirth and can interfere with mother’s daily routine and her maternal_child relationship. Epilepsy is one of the most common life-threatening neurological disorders and depression among the population with epilepsy is more common than the normal population. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of postpartum depression in patients with epilepsy and its association with some of the factors involved in. Methods: This is the cross-sectional study was performed in Shohada-e-Kargar Hospital in Yazd. A total of 40 women with epilepsy who had given birth in this hospital during the years 1392-1393 were selected by available sampling method. Questions related depression in the Edinburgh questionnaire were asked by telephone. This questionnaire contained ten questions of 4 options with scores of 0-3 Data was analyzed by using SPSS software and Chi-square test. Results: Of the 40 women with epilepsy who had been giving birth in Shohada-e-Kargar Hospital during 1392-1396, 17 (42.5%) had no depression, 8 (20%) had mild depression and 15 (37.5%) had severe depression. Relationship between Age, number of births, abortion history, duration of epilepsy with postpartum depression were investigated. There was no significant relationship between them and the prevalence of postpartum depression in these patients. There was no meaningful relationship between antiepileptic drug therapy and its type as preventing postpartum depression. Conclusion:The prevalence of postpartum depression in patients with epilepsy is higher than of the normal population. Therefore, early and prophylactic measures are required to reduce its serious complications. however, factors such as age, number of births, abortion history, duration of epilepsy are not involved in the prevalence of postpartum depression in patients with epilepsy. Also, anti-epileptic drugs and its type do not play a role in preventing post-traumatic depression.
