Domestication and Foreignization in Poetry Translation: A Case Study of Persian Translations of Shakespeare's sonnets

This study aimed at investigating Persian translation of culture-specific items in Shakespeare's sonnets. For this purpose, two translated versions of Shakespeare'ssonnets by Tafazzoli and Moghaddam were selected. In this paper, the applied strategies of domestication and foreignization proposed by aixela were analyzed. The purposewas to find out whether aixe 's strategies were applicable in translation of Shakespeare's sonnets. In case they were, which strategy was most frequently appliedby each of the translators. The results of the study demonstrated that the most frequentlyapplied strategy by Tafazzoli was extratextual gloss, i.e. a foreignization strategy while the most commonly used one by Moghaddam was autonomous creation, i.e. a domestication strategy.
