چکیده مقاله:

Background: Osteoarthritis is a common rheumatoid disease. The knee joint is the most common joint which can show osteoarthritis changes. Knee osteoarthritis leads to abnormal biomechanics of knee joint, pain and changes of knee muscles activity. The aim of study was to evaluate the thickness of quadriceps muscle in patients with knee osteoarthritis by ultrasonography.Materials & Methods: Patients with grade 1&2 knee osteoarthritis and age between 40 to 70 years old were included. Thickness of rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis oblique, and vastus intermedius were evaluated in fair and rest position. Looking for doing each degree of contraction, the image of ultrasonography fixed after 5 seconds from start contraction. On average; muscle thickness for each degree of contraction was recorded three times. All these steps between 7 to 10 were repeated by examiner. Results: Forty-one patients with 54.85 (6.7) years of age, weight 78 (12.46) kg, height 1.62 (7.04) cm participated in this study. The average of muscles thickness of rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis oblique, and vastus intermedius in rest position were respectively 18.53(3.80), 13.57 (4.7), 17.67 (4.47), 31.33 (8.43), 23.02 (6.40). The average of muscles thickness of rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis oblique, vastus intermedius in fair position were 21.79(5.90), 13.05(3.68), 18.48(4.83), 3.73(8.39), and 20.95(5.93), respectively. Conclusion: Muscle thickness changes of rectus femoris and vastus lateralis increases in rest to fair position. In contrast, that of the vastus medialis, vastus medialis oblique, and vastus intermedius decreases in rest to fair position.
