چکیده مقاله:

Lavandula stoechas (Lavender) is a medicinal plant belonging to Lamiaceae family. It has been used for the treatment of several diseases in Persian Medicine. Moreover, lavender has been proved to possess a wide range of pharmacological activities. This review aim to provide a summary on the botanical characteristics, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, pharmacokinetics and toxicity of L. stoechas. Material and Methods: In this study, we reviewed major unpublished old texts, and published and electronic literature on Traditional Medicines of different regions of the world to find traditional uses of L. stoechas. The electronic database were used to retrieve articles on pharmacological effect and phytochemistry of L. stoechas including PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Scopus.Findings: Traditional uses of L. stoechas have been recorded mostly in Mediterranean regions in particularly Iran and Turkey. The phytochemical investigations show that L. stoechas contains essential oil, flavonoids, longipinene derivatives, and triterpenoids. Crude extracts and pure compounds isolated from L. stoechas have pharmacological properties such as antiinflammatory, angioprotective, anxiolytic, antimicrobial, hair growth stimulant, sedative, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, anti-diabetes and antispasmodic activities. Conclusion: Modern pharmacological studies have now validated many traditional uses of L. stoechas. The data reviewed here revealed that L. stoechas is a potential source for the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Data regarding many aspects of this plant such as mechanisms of actions, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects of the extracts, and active compounds is still limited which call for additional studies particularly in humans
