The Effect of Audio-visual Authentic Materials on the Intermediate Iranian EFL Learners’ Incidental Vocabulary Learning and Retention

This study aimed to investigate whether using authentic audio-visual materials had any significant effect on intermediate EFL learners’ retention and incidental vocabulary learning. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a total number of 40 participants, aged 16 to 20, was selected based on their performance on Oxford Placement Test and divided into the experimental and control groups. The same content was taught to both groups during a 10-session treatment with the only difference being that the experimental group was used audio-visual materials, while the traditional method of teaching vocabulary was employed with the control group. At the end of the instruction, the vocabulary post-test parallel to the vocabulary pre-test was administered to the participants of both groups. After that, a delayed post-test parallel to the vocabulary pre and post-tests was administered to the participants of both groups after an interval of two weeks. Finally, the mean scores of both groups on three tests were compared through independent samples t-test which led to the rejection of the null hypotheses. Thus, teaching vocabulary by using audio-visual materials proved to have a significant effect on intermediate EFL learners’ incidental vocabulary learning and retention
