چکیده مقاله:

Introduction & Aim: Breast cancer is the second common cancer in the world and the second cause of death in Iran after lung cancer. Assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as an outcome variable following the diagnosis of this disease trajectory and its treatments is of the utmost importance among women and their spouses. In the context of cancer, women and their spouses may experience different kinds of distress. During recovery process, it is important for nurses to be aware of these changes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of radiotherapy on HRQoL changes in breast cancer patients and their spouses during the treatment. Methods: This is a descriptive study with prospective design which was started from the beginning of the radiotherapy and continued up to the end. Data collection was done in two stages, T1 (first to third session of the radiotherapy) and T2 (last week of the radiotherapy) in one of the educational hospitals affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. An eligible sample was recruited by purposive sampling. The sample included 60 women with breast cancer and 60 spouses (n=120) who answered to the questionnaires of the study, i.e., demographic-clinical information sheets, EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ BR-23.Results: The average age of women in this study was 40.7 ± 8.19 years. The results indicated that decreased physical function in women (p<0.001), and deteriorated emotional function (p<0.001) and financial problems (p<0.01) in their spouses were important variables with significant changes during the period of radiotherapy. Conclusion: The results suggest that the nurses should have a holistic perspective in the measurement of HRQoL and design special intervention programs from the beginning of radiotherapy and integrating it into the care plan of the patients and support them and their spouses.
