Meeting the physical features of the space that human lives in it, is his/ her inalienable right. The more comfortable a person is in a space, he/ she will be therefore in tranquility, too. The overarching goal of sustainable residential complexes is to meet housing needs. The aim of this study is to determine the success factors for achieving sustainable residential complexes from environmental perspectives for meeting housing needs and then presenting a checklist for sustainable residential complexes. As the significance of the environmental performance of buildings grows so the need for systems that can assess environmental performance becomes more important. Learning from world experiences, 10 Sustainable residential complexes were selected based on some factors. For acquaintance with latest technologies, they have chosen between years 2003 and 2017. The case studies are in different climates. Another important factor in selection was certifications like LEED. The sustainability factors of the complexes were studied. The research method was gathering data from internet resources and then studying success factors in sustainability. Findings revealed some success factors as: appropriate design, reuse of rainwater, solar systems, sustainable, durable and local materials, green roofs, insulation, and high efficiency irrigation systems and so on. Also the method of data gathering is based on studies and references that are basic in sustainable architecture and design. As a result, the basic aim of any building environmental assessment scheme is to set criteria against which to rate a building and then to provide a score or descriptive rating for that building. This rating can be used to show the building’s environmental credentials and can have commercial value in terms of promoting a sustainable, eco-friendly image.
