Design and Retrofitting of Structures under Transient Dynamic Loads by a Topology Optimization Scheme

In this paper we shall show how the dynamic response of a multi-storey structure can be optimized by finding an appropriate layout for the bracing system. This is performed by the use of a topology optimization scheme for which we propose a new method to obtain the optimal layout. The use of such a scheme can be regarded as a suitable tool for engineering judgment in the first steps of designing or retrofitting of structures under static or dynamic loadings. Some examples of multi-storey structures under loadings induced by base excitation are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the method.
