Analysis of phytochemical screening and antioxidant/antimicrobial efficacy of Anabasis aphylla leave extracts

The present study was performed to evaluate the phytochemical screening, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Anabasis aphylla L. extracts. The presence of alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, terpenoid, steroid and sterols in the extracts of aerial parts of A. aphylla is shown with phytochemical screening. After collecting and authentication, aerial parts of the plant were dried, powdered and extracted with methanol, then further fractioned with n-hexan, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water. Antimicrobial activities of four fractions (methanol, ethyl acetate, n- butanol, and water) were studied using disc diffusion assay. Different concentrations of the extracts (1, 10, 25 and 100 mg/ml) were exposed to microbial species. There was the dose-dependent relationship between extract concentration and inhibition of microbial growth. The largest inhibition zone was obtained with n-butanol extract against Aspergillus niger (20 mm). The antimicrobial activity of extracts was also compared with the standard antibiotic and antifungal drugs such as amoxicillin and ketoconazol (100 μg/disc). Furtheremore, the antioxidant activity of two fractions (methanol and ethyl acetate) were investigated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and β-carotene/linoleic acid assays. The extracts showed no antioxidant activity in DPPH method. In β-carotene/linoleic acid test, the ethyl acetate (100 mg/ml) showed antioxidant activity (81.8%).
