Promoting Pro-Environmental Behavior: a Review

Environmental psychology is an inherently multidisciplinary field of inquiry. It concerns the study of individual behaviors and experience in context. Environmental psychologists have an important role to play in the management of environmental problems by the promotion of behavioral changes. Interdisciplinary collaboration is needed to effectively address related issues, because environmental problems are not just psychological problems; they are also ecological, technological, and socio-cultural problems. The challenge of this review is to understand the motivational and structural factors and processes that threaten environmental sustainability, so that pro-environmental behaviors could be facilitated and emerge worldwide. The focus of this paper is on the ways to promote pro-environmental sensitivity, sustainability and awareness in society as a whole
