Effects of Sesame Seeds on Metabolic Responses in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent endocrine diseases in the world. Regarding importance of nutritional factors in management of diabetes, this study was designed to explore the effect of sesame seeds on blood glucose and lipid profile in type 2 diabetic patients at Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in 2019.Materials & Methods: A clinical trial study was conducted on 60 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were randomly divided into two groups of 30 sesame seeds consumers (case) and 30 non sesame seeds consumers (control).The case group was given 60 grams sesame seeds per day for 3 months and the control group did not receive any sesame seeds.Fasting blood glucose, HbA1C,TC, LDL-C, HDL-C and TG were measured at baseline and after 90 days in both groups. 24 hours dietary recalls were obtained at the first, middle and end of the study.Data were analyzed by two independent samples t-test and paired t-test.Results: After consuming sesame seeds FBS, HbA1C, TC,TG and LDL were statistically diminished but reducing HDL was not significant.Conclusion: Our data have shown sesame seeds consumption can improve the metabolic responses in type 2 diabetic patients.
