OQYANA Challenges; A Marine Geotechnical Case Study

Abstract OQYANA is an off-shore mixed used residential and recreational development contributing to The World islands located approximately 4 km from the coast of Dubai. The project is consisted of 22 reclaimed islands including a service island with a total area of approximately 42 ha within a larger area of 145 ha. This case study summarizes the result of geotechnical investigation performed at the site by Fugro Middle East (FME). Twenty one (21) boreholes and eight (8) piezometric Cone Penetration tests were performed. This case study also briefly discuss the ground improvement methods suggested for the project and also address issues such as edge protection and geotechnical aspects of the structures The project, with approximate cost of $6,000,000,000 is a unique and challenging one that the world economy may not see in years to come and is worth a quick review.
