چکیده مقاله:
The objective of this research was to investigate the performance of a sequential anaerobic-aerobic performance for the treatment of a synthetic wastewater containing Reactive Red 198 using activated sludge. Dye decolourisation was achieved in the anaerobic stage whereas partial mineralization occurred in the aerobic stage. The overall COD removal efficiency improved with increase in glucose concentration, whereas the overall colour and aerobic aromatic amine removal efficiency was not significantly affected by change in glucose concentration. Decrease in decolourisation efficiency with increase in dye concentration was observed and attributed to increase in the toxicity of dye and/or dye metabolites. Overall COD removal was unaffected by increase in dye concentration, whereas, as RR198 concentration was increased from 50 to 200 ppm, the extent of dye mineralization initially increased and then decreased. MLSS in the range 1000-5000 mg/l did not have a pronounced effect on the overall COD removal efficiency, although it had a slight positive effect on the colour removal efficiency and the extent of dye mineralization. Under the best conditions, 98% discoloration, 98% COD reduction and about 55 % aromatic amine degradation (=dye mineralization) was achievedusing the sequential anaerobic-aerobic process.
