Islamic Justice from the lens of Mohammad Reza Hakimi

Scripturalist Islam depicts Islamic teachings as something completelydifferent from science, philosophy and mysticism. It separates pure divineunderstanding from worldly knowledge. The Mashhad seminary has been onesuch Islamic center which has its focus on non-feqhist and scripturalistreadings of Islam. Mohammad Reza Hakimi names the Mashhad school ofreligious thought as the separation school. This school believes in revival ofthe forgotten sections of religion, propagate Qur’anic truth, execute Islamicordinances and promote social justice. This brand of scripturalism in the Shi’iworld has been under the influence of egalitarian perspectives of the politicalleft and has put its endeavours to show that social justice is the leadingpriority of Islam. For justice-oriented Islamist view, theological philosophyand political philosophy are related in which they claim that any ideologythat lacks political philosophy is not ideology . By equating religion andideology, Hakimi extends this belief to religion. Justice-orientedscripturalist/separationist Islam needs this philosophy to address poverty andsocial justice. Even Islamic government is pursued to implement this goal.Justice-oriented Islam is fed by Shi’i justice discourse based on the teachingsof Imam Ali in Nahj al-Balagheh which advertises for distributive justice andits main agenda in fighting against poverty. Shi’i justice-oriented Islamistsmostly believed that mere distribution of wealth and income will root outpoverty. They never talk about equal opportunity for everyone in front of thelaw. As far as this distribution could not be based on existing laws, anddemocracy and freedom would be harmful to the cause, absolute powershould be granted to a just ruler whose agenda is only promoting socialjustice. Even in Al-Hayat’s section on economy, social justice is the mostdiscussed topic in detail. Thus, scripturalist Islam has been successful incapturing the emotional nature of the return of the Islamic values and justice.Within this context, the paper would highlight how Hakimi relate justice toShi’i Islam, Iranian history, Iranian culture, international conflicts and thepolitical developments of Iranian society
