Controlling food waste via a new technique: nutrient intake efficiency (An application of a non-parametric method among Iranian households)

Consuming the optimal combination of foods regionally available is an appropriate way to reduce food waste and improve the nutritional and health status of consumers. We provided a comprehensive technique for calculating the nutrient efficiency score (NES) of Iranian households based on food consumption pattern during 2007-2014 by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. We found that Iranian households can increase nutrient efficiency by decreasing 20% of their current consumption of food items in the rural areas. The lowest NES was in the rural and urban areas of the provinces of Sistan va Baluchistan and Khuzestan. In the second stage, factors affecting nutrient efficiency were determined through estimation of a panel-data model. Age of the household breadwinner, education level and female-headed households were significantly and positively associated with the NES. Based on these findings, the government would be able to increase the NES by investing in socio-economic status such as education and job recreation without spending lots of untargeted subsidies that are currently distributed among Iranian households.
