چکیده مقاله:
Pakistan is facing severe electricity shortfall for over a decade which had once reached around 5,363 MW in 2016. The key reason for this electricity is the unmet electricity demand owing to lack of initiative on the both on supply and demand side. The electricity demand is growing continues to grow exponentially with increasing population and urbanization as well as with stable economy. Although, recently there is some progress evident on supply side yet there is little focus on demand -side management. The energy efficiency and conservation measure can potentially help to reduce the supply-demand stress. It is estimated that every unit of energy saved reduces the need for capacity addition by 2 to 2.5 times As such, this study investigates the energy efficiency and conservation measures across all consumers groups for reducing the electricity demand in Pakistan. It is estimated that a total of 70,253 TJ electricity saving potential exist in Pakistan which is equivalent to generate 3,713 MW of electricity. In total electricity saving potential is 38% in the industrial sector, 37% in the domestic sector followed by agriculture, commercial and others which is around 17%, 5% and 3% respectively. The estimated saving potential of electricity can reduce the half of the gap between electricity demand and supply in the country. It is, therefore, concluded that by implementing energy efficiency and conservation measures, the gap between electricity demand and supply can also be reduced substantially.
