چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Cancer diagnosis can create many spiritual crises for patients. Their self-confidence and religious faith become at stake and their personal connections are disturbed due to uncertainty about the future. Spiritual care can bring about effective adjustment for the patients. This study was conducted to determine the effect of spiritual intervention on the spiritual health of cancer patients. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 70 cancer patients admitted to the chemo unit of the Vasei Hospital of Sabzevar from 2016 to 2017. The sampling method was convenience and purposive with the samples selected randomly and assigned to two groups: experimental (35 subjects) and control (35 subjects). The data collection tool was Palutzin-Ellison Spiritual Health Questionnaire. The intervention was conducted as small discussion groups in six sessions at the oncology unit of the hospital. The spiritual health of both groups was determined before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed in SPSS 16 using Chi-square, independent t-test, paired t-test, Mann-Whitney and regression analysis at a significance level of 5%. Findings: In the study, the age of onset had a direct effect on the patient mental health. Mean age was not significantly different in the two groups (48.88 ± 12.38 versus 46.80 ± 9.30, P = 0.428). Spiritual health and its dimensions (religious and existential) had no significant differences before the intervention, yet after the intervention, the spiritual health score in the intervention group increased from 69.28 ± 12.55 to 85.16 ± 7.17, with a significant difference between the mean scores of spiritual health between the two groups (p = 0.001). Conclusion: By identifying the spiritual needs of cancer patients, nurses can provide suitable opportunities for their spiritual health. Thus, it is recommended that the role of spiritual health in nursing care be taken seriously to maintain and promote spiritual health of cancer patients.
