Lessons of Knowledge Management towards Innovative Technologies in Petroluem Industry: A Synopsis of Tecnology Development and Strategies

Since the beginning of the modern age of oil and gas, technology has played afundamental role in supporting the efficient production of hydrocarbons. Oil and gastechnologies are often destined for hostile, hard-to-reach environments such as deepoffshore waters or in the high temperature and pressure encountered at the bottom ofa well. This paper uncovers historical and current steps walked from knowledge managementtowards technology development in oil sector usable for a hydrocarbon abundant countryincluding Iran. We aim to unravel the lessons of history and current trends in oil and gastechnology development and deployment for a hydrocarbon abundant country. The study triesto review challenges in oil sector and technology impact, background and motivation todevelop and adopt technology. The paper discusses sources and requirement to knowledgemanagement leading to technology development considering developed nations experiencesespecially the U.S. This study explains some key strategic goals that include: value creationthrough production and reserve replacement, value creation through increased export oftechnology, value creation through employment and competence development, and energyefficient and cleaner production. The paper addresses and recommends manpowercompetency, policies directed toward operating companies, and guiding government funds asinput to technology strategies are keys in technology development in the oil and gas sector.Full-scale tests must be completed before a technology can be proved and the market willaccept it. As a result, commercializing technology in the oil and gas market is costly and timeintensive; with an average of 16 years from concept to widespread commercial adoption.
