چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Consumption of potatoes is increasing worldwide. Previous prospective cohort studies have reported controversial findings for the association of potato consumption and risk of mortality. We aimed to conduct a systematic review of studies on the association of different types of potatoes and risk of all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular mortality in adults. Methods: We searched for the relevant prospective cohort studies published up to June 2018, in PubMed, SCOPUS and Cochrane library databases using suitable keywords. Summary RRs with 95% CIs were calculated using fixed effects model. In cases of high between studies heterogeneity, we used random effects model to reach the best finding. Results: Ten studies for all-cause mortality (25,208 deaths), three studies for CVD mortality (2366 deaths), and seven studies for cancer mortality (4877 deaths) were included. Meta-analysis was conducted for the association of potato consumption with all-cause and cancer mortality. No significant association was found between potato consumption and risk of all-cause (RR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.8, 1.01, p=0.096) and cancer (RR: 1.08; 95% CI: 0.94, 1.25, P=0.248) mortality. In addition, no significant linear association was found between each 100 g/d increments in potato consumption and risk cancer (P=0.09) and all-cause (P=0.7) mortality. Moreover, nonlinear association between potato consumption and risk of cancer mortality was also non-significant (P-nonlinearity= 0.99). Conclusion: We failed to find significant association between consumption of potato and risk of all-cause, cancer and CVD mortality. Further randomized controlled clinical trials are required to conform in this issue.
