چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe lipid profile and insulin resistance among apparently healthy obese women. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional study. Apparently healthy obese participants (n=100) were recruited from the nutrition clinic. Anthropometric measurements included body weight, height, and waist and hip circumferences. The body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio were calculated. Fasting blood sugar, lipid, and fasting insulin were obtained from each participant using venous plasma samples. The insulin resistance was estimated by the HOMA-IR index, which was calculated by dividing the product of fasting blood sugar (mg/dl) and fasting insulin (mIU/ml) by 405. HOMA-IR≥3.99 was taken to indicate high insulin resistance. Results: he mean of age, weight, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and insulin resistance were 27.71±7.21 (years), 85.05±11.02 (kg), 105.67±10.64 (cm), 0.91±0.06, 0.66±0.06, 88.45± 10.28 (mg/dl), 136.06±65.81 (mg/dl), 189.11±36.26 (mg/dl), 117.90±27.92 (mg/dl), 45.46±9.68 (mg/dl) and 3.02±1.45, respectively. The hypertriglyceridemia (12.3%), hypercholesterolemia (36.8%), high LDL-cholesterolemia (31.6%) and low HDL-cholesterolemia (24.6%) were prevalent. Approximately 23.5% of participants were classified as having insulin resistance, respectively. Conclusion: Based on the results, the hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance were prevalent among apparently healthy obese women. It seems that moderate weight loss will be associated with improvement in these biochemical factors among these women.
