EVALUATING EFFECT OF HERBAL CANDY, IRANIAN MEDICINE BASED PRODUCT, ON BODY COMPOSITION AND APPETITE IN OBESE AND OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE

Background and Aim: Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in most countries. Considering that today, obesity treatment drugs are limited and have many side effects and there is no effective way to reduce appetite, this study was conducted to evaluate effect of herbal candy, Iranian medicine based product, on body composition and appetite in obese and overweight people.Methods: In this randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial (RCT), participants were selected from overweight and obese people. People received herbal candy (Contains a combination of Portulaca oleracea, Plantago psyllium and peanut oil) in the intervention group and placebo candy in the placebo group, for 8 weeks. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) questionnaire was completed by participants, for evaluation of appetite, three times a week. Measuring body composition was performed at first and end of the study.Results: In the comparison between groups, mean weight and body mass index of subjects in intervention group compared to the placebo group had a greater reduction (P<0.001) after intervention. About Indicators Related to Appetite, the mean of hunger, satiety and eating capacity indicator, at all three intervals of noon and night meal, in the intervention group compared to the placebo group showed a greater decrease, increase and decrease, respectively (P<0.05). Conclusion: Combination of produced herbal candy at a dose of 4 grams (2 pcs), half an hour before each meal for 8 weeks, can be effective in reducing weight and appetite of obese and overweight people.
