چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia in the elderly and is associated with severe and irreversible complications including cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between body mass index and the risk of Cerebral Thromboembolic Events in patients with AF.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with AF from February 2016 to February 2017. A questionnaire including demographic data and the Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age ≥75 years, Diabetes mellitus, Stroke (double weight) (CHADS2) scoring system criteria were filled for each subject based on interview. Anthropometric measurements including weight and height measurements were performed for all subjects and the body mass index (BMI) of the subjects were calculated. Subjects were categorized into normal weight, overweight and obese based on the World Health Organization BMI cut-offs. Data was analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software version 22.Results: A total of 131 subjects (70, 53.4% male and 61, 46.6% female) participated in the study. The mean age of the subjects was 66.7 ± 6.7 years. Most of the patients (45.0%) had normal weight followed by overweight (35.9%) and obese (19.1%). There was a significant relationship between overweight/obesity and the high-risk group based on CHADS2 scoring system (p=0.04, OR=4.29).Conclusion: Overweight/obesity was significantly associated with increased risk of cerebral thromboembolic events in patients with AF. Physicians should be more cautious in managing the AF in overweight/obese patients.
