چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Licorice is a medicinal plant with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Muscle soreness, as one of the most common sports injuries, is independent of fitness level and according to intensity, it is divided into 2 forms of acute and delayed. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of exhaustive exercise and licorice on liver enzymes during exhaustive activities. Methods: This study was a double-blind clinical trial on 18 healthy inactive women aged 25 to 35 years. They were randomly divided into 3groups of 6 people including licorice, Ibuprofen and placebo group. They used the drugs 3times for 4 days. Thigh, hip circumference, and perceived pain were measured in 4stages before the test, 24h, 48h, and 72h after exercise. Blood sampling was done above at a rate of 10cc. then enzymes were measured by a German kit. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 version. Results: It concluded that licorice and ibuprofen did not have an effect on AST, ALP and ALT serum levels following an eccentric exercise. The range of thigh circumference was decreased in placebo and licorice group, but it was increased at first and then decreased in ibuprofen group. In all groups, Talag pain scale had a similar trend in four measurement steps but in licorice group, the amount of pain slightly decreased. Conclusion: the results indicated that licorice supplements for 4 days failed to prevent DOMS progress. it can be effective only for the negative effects of DOMS during long-term recovery, also did not have an effect on the level of the liver enzymes.
