COMPARISON OF KNOWLEDGE AND DIETARY BEHAVIORS AMONG DIABETIC AND NON-DIABETIC SUBJECTS IN NEYSHABOOR

Background and Aim: Knowledge and dietary behaviors play an important role in the prevention, control and treatment of diabetes. Therefore, this study was to compare knowledge and dietary behaviors of people with type 2 diabetes and healthy individuals referred to Neyshaboor health centerMethods: The research instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire that was used after measuring its validity and reliability. Sampling method was available among patients referred to Health Center No. 7 in Neyshaboor. After explaining the objectives of the study, 143 people (60 diabetic patients and 83 non-diabetics) were volunteered to participate in the study. After collecting data, the data were analyzed by Chi-square, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney, logistic regression and ANCOVA methodsResults: The findings of this study showed a significant difference in the score obtained from knowledge and dietary behaviors among diabetics and non-diabetics (p <0.001). Nutrition knowledge score in diabetic patients was 42.9 ± 25.4 and in normal subjects, it was 71.2 ± 22.9 in 100. The dietary behaviors score in diabetics was 48.3 ± 17.8 and 61.6 ± 20.4 in non-diabetic subjectsConclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the level of nutritional knowledge of diabetic subjects was lower than healthy subjects, and inappropriate dietary behaviors were more prevalent in them. Therefore, in addition to presenting the necessary training, it is suggested that in subsequent studies, the effect of these factors on the incidence and treatment of diabetes will be investigated
