چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of interconnected serious disorders and oxidative stress contribute to its pathogeneses. The current study was conducted to investigate the effect of Cuminum cyminum Essential Oil (CuEO) supplementation on antioxidant status in patients with MetS.Methods: This was a randomized clinical trial in which 56 patients with MetS aged 18-60 yrs and were on stable medication who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were randomly allocated to an intervention or a control group. CuEO or placebo was administered to the participants for 8 weeks. Data pertaining to height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and BMI as well as food consumption were collected at begining and end of the study. Fasting blood samples were obtained and antioxidant status were assessed at beginning and end of the study. Results: At 8 weeks, a total of 44 patients completed this study. compared with placebo group CuEO supplementation caused a significant increase in SOD (P= 0.001), TAC (P= 0.002) and a significant decrease in MDA (P= 0.01) in CuEO supplementation group. In within-group analysis, CuEO lead to significant decrease in MDA and increase TAC levels by 13.33% (p= 0.04) and 6.75% (p=0.05), respectively. Conclusion: CuEO supplementation can improve some antioxidant factors, as SOD and TAC and decrease MDA in MetS patients.
