چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementation with L-carnitine on body composition in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Methods: Sixty-three CAD patients were randomly allocated to two groups: L-carnitine (1000 mg /day) and placebo. The intervention period was 3 months. At baseline and the end of weeks 6 and 12, Waist circumference and the hip circumference were measured. Lean Body Mass (LBM), Fat Mass (FM), Percentage of Body Fat (PBF), and weight were also measured using body analyzer Jown Plus (Avis 333). Finally, the body mass index (BMI) and WHR were calculated. Results: Daily intake of 1 g L-carnitine supplements for 12 weeks reduced body fat percentage in patients with CAD significantly (P <0.001), but had no effect on weight and BMI. In the L-carnitine group, LBM increased significantly at the end of the week 12 and increased by 6.7% (P <0.001), while in the control group, LBM did not change significantly during the study. Although during the study, LBM was increased in the supplemented group, but did not show significant differences between the two groups. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated a higher effectiveness of L-carnitine supplementation compared to placebo as an auxiliary treatment for improving body composition in coronary artery disease patients.
