چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: ADHD is the most common children s psychiatric disorder with oxidative stress and inflammation condition as playing role in the development of this. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and inflammatory mediators in children with ADHD.Methods: This double-blind clinical trial was performed in 70 children (6-13 years) with ADHD diagnosed by the pediatric psychologist and receiving maintenance therapy. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either a single capsule of 1000 IU vitamin D (n = 35) or placebo (n = 35) daily for 12 weeks. The serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), Homocysteine and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined before and after the intervention. Results: In the intervention group, the mean serum vitamin D and SOD significantly increased significantly after intervention (P<0.001), but the mean serum CRP and IL-6 levels were significantly lower than the intervention before intervention (P<0.001). Independent t-test showed that the average of changes in vitamin D (P<0.001), SOD (P=0.001), IL-6 (P<0.001) and serum CRP (P<0.001) after intervention were significant, but the mean of homocysteine changes in the two groups was not significantly less than the placebo group before the intervention in the intervention group (P=0.46).Conclusion: The present clinical trial study showed that vitamin D supplementation can reduce CRP and IL-6 and increase SOD in children with ADHD. The physiological variation in vitamin D may have an important role in ADHD.
