THE EFFECT OF HCA SUPPLEMENTATION ON SERUM LEVELS OF LEPTIN, ADIPONECTIN AND LIPID PROFILE AMONG OBESE WOMEN WITH NAFLD

Background and Aim: The effect of HCA supplementation on serum levels of leptin, adiponectin and lipid profile among obese women with NAFLD.Methods: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 44 obese women aged 20-50 years with NAFLD were randomly allocated into two groups: Control group (those who received weight loss recommendations) and HCA group (who not only received weight loss took two capsules of 1125 mg HCA per day) for a 8-week period. Anthropometric measurements, liver ultrasonography as well as serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, leptin, adiponectin and lipid profile were assessed at the beginning and end of the study.Results: personal details as well as severity of liver steatosis and serum liver enzyme did not differ significantly between the groups at the baseline. Although HCA supplement resulted in weight and BMI reduction compared to the control group, the difference between the groups were not significant. Indeed, HCA supplementation could significantly decrease serum levels of Alt (p=0.005) while reduction in other liver enzymes and leptin and an increase in serum adiponectin were not statistically significant. Serum triglyceride and total cholesterol levels decreased in the both groups but the differences between the groups were not statistically significant.Conclusion: Although HCA supplementation causes some changes in contributing factors in NAFLD, more investigation is required for assessing these changes and the underlying mechanisms.
