چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim: Obese children are at higher risk for the development of cardiovascular risk factors and obesity in their later life. Dietary intake of children is a noticeable factor in obesity development. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of curcumin supplementation on cardiovascular risk factors among Iranian female adolescents. Methods: 60 adolescent girls (age 13-18 years) were randomly assigned to either placebo or intervention group. Adolescents were asked to consume one 500 mg standardized turmeric extract 95% tablet per day along with a mild weight loss diet for 10 week. Anthropometric and biochemical indices were assessed at the baseline and the end of the intervention. Results: Curcumin supplementation in female adolescents had beneficial effects on body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, HDL levels and TG/HDL ratio (p value<0.05). However, in univariate analysis of covariance, no significant differences were found between intervention and placebo group after 10 week of supplementation (p value> 0.05).Conclusion: Prescription of curcumin supplement along with a slight weight loss diet could have beneficial effects on some cardiovascular risk factors in overweight and obese female adolescents. Larger clinical trials with higher doses of curcumin and longer duration are needed to confirm the results of the current study.
