چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Calendula officinalis which belongs to the family of Asteraceae is an aromatic herb used in traditional medicine. Its various constituents such as flavonoids, lycopene, rutin, sterols and many others have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and controversial hypoglycemic effects. The present study was designed to evaluate the antidiabetic properties of hydroalcoholic flower extract of Calendula officinalis with emphasis on three parameters namely glucose, TNF-α and leptin. Methods: Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of strepzotocin (60 mg/kg). Hydroalcoholic extract which was purchased from Zardband pharmaceutical firm was orally administered to diabetic rats for four weeks at doses of 100, 150 and 250 mg/kg of body weight. Results: Significant reduction in blood glucose was observed in all treated groups with the extract. Diabetic group treated with 250 mg/kg of the extract showed the greatest reduction in TNF- level compared to normal diabetic group. The effect of the extract on leptin levels was not statistically significant among groupsConclusion: This investigation clearly showed that at doses of 100 mg/kg, 150mg/kg and 250mg/kg of hydroalcoholic flower extract of Calendula officinalis hypoglycemic effects occurred and at these same dosages had also anti-TNF-α activity.
